Automatic Door Installation Cost: What Moves the Price
Automatic door installation cost is really two numbers: what the equipment costs, and what it costs to get it fitted, commissioned and handed over working. This guide explains what moves each one, why two quotations for the same opening can differ honestly, and exactly what to send us so the number you get is firm rather than indicative.
We have deliberately not put rand figures in this article. For worked examples see our automatic door prices cost guide; this page is about what drives the figure.

Traffic volume decides more than opening width
This is the part most people leave out of an enquiry, and it is the part that changes the answer most.
Duty rating is the operator specification matched to how many cycles the entrance actually does. A shopping-centre entrance and an office side door can be the same width and need completely different equipment.
Under-specify and the automatic door cost looks good on day one, then reappears as repeated failures and lost trading time. Over-specify and you pay for capacity you never use.
So when you ask how much do automatic doors cost, the honest first question back is how many people walk through per day.
Where the money actually goes

The operator. Motor, gearbox, controller, encoder and belt in the header. Priced by duty rating and panel weight.
Panels and framing. Aluminium profile and safety glass. Larger and heavier glass pushes the operator and track specification up with it, so glass choice is a mechanical decision as well as an aesthetic one.
Track and carriages. These carry the full panel weight through every cycle and are the parts that wear.
Sensors. Activation detects approach; presence holds the opening while somebody is standing in it. A full presence package across the whole opening costs more than activation alone, and it is not the place to save money.
Labour. Install, commission and hand over. Access, working height, trading hours and making good all move this.
Extras. Battery backup, access control integration, break-out panels for escape routes.
Single slide or bi-parting
A single slide moves one panel. Bi-parting, often called double automatic doors, moves two panels apart from the centre.
Bi-parting costs more because there are two carriages, two interlocks and more hardware. It also clears the opening roughly twice as fast for the same clear width, which on a busy entrance is the difference between keeping up and always catching up.
On a quiet side entrance a single slide is usually the right call, and automatic sliding door installation cost drops accordingly.
New installation or modernisation

This is the single biggest lever on an existing entrance, and it is decided by condition rather than age.
If the header and track are straight and sound, fitting a new operator to the existing framing is normally the cheaper and faster route. Automatic door replacement cost in that form is a fraction of a full entrance.
If the track is dented or corroded, the framing has moved, or water is getting past, then modernisation is putting good equipment onto a bad foundation and a new installation is the honest recommendation. See automatic door modernisation.
A photograph of the header with the cover off usually tells us which of the two you are looking at.
Why two quotations can differ honestly
Not every difference is someone being expensive.
Different duty ratings for the same opening. Different sensor coverage. One quotation including making good and the other not. One assuming normal hours and the other after-hours. One including a battery backup.
When you compare automatic door price quotations, compare the duty rating, the sensor package, the hours assumed and what happens on power failure. Those four lines explain most gaps.
Cost over ten years, not on day one

The cheapest entrance to buy is rarely the cheapest to own.
Parts availability matters more than most buyers expect. Equipment with no local spares turns a one-hour repair into a six-week wait with the opening out of service.
We import and assemble the MC-125 sliding operator and MCW-100 swing operator at our own facility in Johannesburg, which is why belts, rollers, guides, sensors and controllers sit on a shelf locally. Both are tested to one million operating cycles and carry a 24-month warranty on the operator. A cycle test is a test result, not a maintenance-free period.
Servicing is the other running line. Quarterly suits retail footfall; twice a year suits a quiet office entrance. See automatic door servicing and our service level agreement for sites that cannot afford downtime.
What to send for a firm quotation

Six things turn an indicative range into a firm number.
Structural opening width and height in millimetres, measured to the brickwork rather than to the existing frame. A photograph from inside and outside. Rough daily footfall. The floor finish, because it decides the threshold detail. Whether the opening forms part of a fire escape route. And whether we can work in normal hours.
With those six, quotations go out within two working days. Where a site survey is needed first we say so rather than letting a date slip quietly.
Request a quote or call 010 412 0062, Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 16:30 and Friday 08:00 to 14:00. We supply, install and service across South Africa.
Sector notes
Retail. Duty rating and spares availability dominate, because a failed entrance at opening time is lost trade.
Healthcare. Bed and trolley clearance, touch-free activation, and work scheduled around clinical use. Access windows affect the labour line.
Offices. Quieter operation and access control integration. Decide early what the entrance does on power failure and on fire alarm.
Industrial and cold storage. Sealing and robustness ahead of appearance, and condensation handled at specification.
Where automatic door installation cost is worth paying more
Full presence sensing across the opening. Duty rating matched to real traffic rather than hoped-for traffic. Local parts availability. Break-out panels where the opening is an escape route.
And where it is not worth paying more: capacity you will never use, and cosmetic upgrades on an entrance whose track is already worn.

Budgeting an automatic door installation cost across a portfolio
If you look after several sites the useful unit is not the price of one entrance, it is cost per opening per year.
Standardising on one operator family across a portfolio is usually cheaper over time than buying the lowest automatic door price at each site. One set of spares, one set of settings your facilities team recognises, one service routine.
Mixed estates are the opposite. Every additional make multiplies the spares you hold and the failure modes your team has to learn, and it slows every repair because the first visit is often diagnostic rather than corrective.
That is not an argument for any particular brand. It is an argument for deciding deliberately rather than letting the estate accumulate whatever was cheapest that quarter.
Common ways an automatic door quote gets revised
Revisions are almost always information arriving late, so they are avoidable.
The opening was measured to the frame. The structural opening is the hole in the brickwork, and it is what the equipment has to fit.
Footfall turned out to be much higher. The duty rating changes and the operator with it.
The floor build-up was not known. A flush threshold has to be planned with the floor, before the screed goes down.
The opening is on an escape route. Break-out panels or a fail-safe release are a specification decision, not an accessory.
Access is harder than it looked. Working over a shopfront at height, or through a centre with restricted delivery hours, changes the labour line.
What is not included unless it is written down
Ask explicitly about these, on any quotation from anyone.
Electrical supply to the header. Many quotations assume a supply is already there, and providing one is an electrician cost.
Making good. Plaster and paint around the opening after the work.
Removal and disposal of the old entrance.
Battery backup. Without it the entrance stops working in an outage and must still be openable by hand.
Access control integration, if the entrance has to talk to a card system.
Servicing as part of the cost, not an afterthought
An automatic entrance is a machine that runs every time somebody walks through it, so budgeting the purchase without budgeting the upkeep understates the real automatic door cost.
A service should cover track and rollers, belt tension, sensor cleaning and a full walk-test of the opening, obstacle detection force, and the battery backup where one is fitted.
Sensor coverage also drifts as the area around an entrance changes. A display stand or queue barrier placed into a detection field turns a correctly commissioned door into a nuisance one, and it is a setting rather than a fault.
Keep the dated records. A service history is what lets you argue wear against defect if a warranty question ever arises.
A realistic sequence from enquiry to handover
Send the six details. Receive a quotation within two working days, or a note that a survey is needed first.
Agree the specification, particularly duty rating, sensor package and what happens on power failure and fire alarm.
Confirm hours and access, because that is where late cost appears.
Installation and commissioning, then a walk-through at handover rather than a certificate handed over at the door. Ten minutes demonstrating the safety behaviour is worth more than any paperwork.
Automatic door installation cost: the short version
Traffic volume sets the duty rating, and duty rating moves the number more than anything else.
Opening width and panel weight follow, then whether the entrance is single or bi-parting, then the sensor package.
On an existing entrance, condition decides whether you are paying a modernisation cost or a full automatic door replacement cost. Age on its own decides nothing.
Labour moves with access, working height and whether the work happens inside or outside trading hours.
Everything else, battery backup, access control, break-out panels for escape routes, is specified deliberately rather than discovered later.
Send the six details and the automatic door installation cost you receive will be a firm number rather than a range.
Automatic door installation cost, answered
What does automatic door installation cost depend on most?
Traffic volume. It sets the duty rating of the operator, the sensor layout and the service interval, and it moves a quotation more than opening width does.
Is automatic door installation cost separate from the door price?
Yes. The automatic door price covers the operator, panels, track and sensors. Installation covers labour, commissioning and making good, and it varies with access and hours.
How much do automatic doors cost in South Africa?
It depends on duty rating, opening width, whether the doors are bi-parting and the sensor package. For worked figures see our automatic door prices cost guide, then send your opening size for a firm number.
Is automatic sliding door installation cost higher than swing?
Usually, because a sliding entrance carries more hardware and a heavier track. A swing operator on a narrow side entrance is normally the cheaper installation.
Can I reduce automatic door installation cost?
Often yes, by modernising rather than replacing. If the header and track are sound, fitting a new operator to existing framing is the cheaper and faster route.
Does automatic door replacement cost less than a new installation?
Replacing an operator usually does. Replacing framing, track and panels approaches the cost of a new entrance.
Why does after-hours work change the price?
Labour rates differ and the work takes longer when the opening has to be handed back usable at the end of each shift. We quote it upfront rather than adding it later.
Do you charge for a site survey?
Sometimes, depending on what it involves and where it is. You will be told beforehand, never afterwards.
What do you need to give me an accurate quote?
Structural opening size in millimetres, a photograph from inside and outside, rough daily footfall, the floor finish, and whether the opening is on an escape route.
How long is a quotation valid?
Ask when you receive it. Exchange rates affect imported components, so we will tell you the validity period rather than leave it open-ended.
